Stargate SG-1 Slash

Commentary by Teand -- Welcome to Daniel's brain. Daniel gets intellectual, causing Jack to glaze over in a whole new way. 24 Oct 2005
(Jack/Daniel :: First Time :: Intellectual Daniel :: NC-17)
- flyboy_fanfic by Biblio -- Jack gets in touch with his inner fanfic author. 24 Oct 2005
(Jack/Daniel :: Established Relationship :: Humor :: NC-17)
Snarky Jack and Daniel take on clichés from the world of slash fan fic when a bored Jack discovers in rapid succession first the t.v. show The Sentinel and then the online world of slashing Jim and Blair. Janet, Sam, and Teal'c all make appearances though they're definitely supporting cast here.
It's hard to poke fun at the worst excesses of your fandom without pissing off your audience but Biblio manages to do just that by wrapping the discussion into a snark-fest between Jack and Daniel. As always, Biblio has strong characterization so it never devolves into two random guys talking; these are definitely Jack and Daniel.
I will not make a habit of quoting lines in my recommendations as they're already too long but I'm making an exception here because this exchange has stuck with me and still makes me smile:
Daniel took a deep breath and tried to get a handle on flyboy's world-view. "So, just to clarify, you’re a gay man who gets so much a couple of hours doing without feels like the end of the world, pretending to be a woman with no experience of gay sex or possibly no experience of sex at all pretending to be a repressed gay man with no experience of gay sex."
"Just throw in Jimbo’s super powers and you’ve got it nailed," Jack added judiciously. "Speaking of which, it’s been ALL DAY since either one of us got nailed," he whined.
"You had brunch on me."
"Except for the brunch quickie."
"See? See!..."
The banter and snark is straight out of the Golden Years of seasons 1-3 - and what I wouldn't give for this Daniel to be my beta reader or to have this Jack's writing speed.

Debriefings
Series 1 2 3 4 5 by Eos -- An entertaining and diverting romp wherein SG-1 is thoroughly debriefed. 24 Oct 2005
(Jack/Daniel, Teal'c/Planet of Jaffa Amazons, Sam/Paul :: Humor, Fluff :: PG)
Channeling the Marx Brothers, SG-1 zings the general with pithy one-liners, non sequitors, and remarkably candid reports back on their (sexual) off world exploits. Janet Fraiser completes the three ring circus atmosphere as she adds her two cents to the discussions.
There's absolutely nothing serious about these pieces but the series is a brilliant send-up of the fanon clichés, most notably the oversexed team that they seem to be in a lot of fics.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
- Divergence by Eos -- Jack and Daniel struggle to cope with the events thrown at them by the writers during season four. 24 Oct 2005
(Jack/Daniel :: Established Relationship :: Angst, Romance :: PG)
There are precious few angst-filled stories that I will read more than once, much less recommend. What keeps me coming back to this one in particular is the unique combination of the honesty of the raw emotion and a strong Daniel who respects himself. He's no quitter, but neither is he a silent sufferer. The angst in this story flows naturally from unhappy events, many of them Stargate canon.
Eos has a strong grasp of scenes and uses it to great effect here. The erosion of a previously strong relationship between Jack and Daniel is told in a spare series of sharply defined scenes that are just enough to define the emotional landscape. They inform without dragging into repetitive anvil-dropping. The unraveling isn't a sudden death but a quiet withering.
One bedroom scene in particular is set just before things come to a head and is so filled with pain that it still brings tears to my eyes after an untold number of readings. Anyone who has been in a dying relationship will recognize at least some, if not most, of the emotional events, upheavals, and final, grim acceptance as Jack and Daniel find themselves on divergent paths.
What sets this apart from most other stories set in season four is the respect the author holds for all of the characters. Sam never descends into screeching hormones, Jack never becomes an irredeemable asshole, and Daniel doesn't become a martyr. This can be hard to find in works set in this time period, making it the more welcome. There are no quick fixes in this story, adding a sense of emotional realism often lacking in fan fic.
At the same time that Stargate changed focus from the wonders of exploration to military exigencies, the strong onscreen relationship between the two original characters, Jack and Daniel, deteriorated until Jack was openly hostile and dismissive. Many fans decried this development; some wrote fan fiction about it; a very few created art. This is one of those gems.
- Reflections of You by Sideburns -- The quantum mirror reflects more than just another universe. When Daniel and Sam travel through it to aid an SGC under imminent threat, it reflects a few home truths, too. 24 Oct 2005
(Jack/Daniel :: First Time :: Quantum Mirror, Angst, Adventure :: NC-17)
Daniel gets a glimpse of what his life could have been as a pop archaeology purveyor when he travels to an alternate universe with Sam to help another SGC fight off an attack by Ra.
One of the best quantum mirror stories that brings together Jack and Daniel, this fic opens with a scene that goes from "ewwwww" to "hot!" in 3.3 seconds flat. Sideburns appears to have done some serious homework -- and I'm a slut for creative application of research -- as this work includes some solid mythology and convincing alien tech techno-babble.
The most interesting character in this story is, surprisingly, Sam. Yes, the author expresses her frustrations with "Carter cum Mary Sue" and parts of this fic left me squirming a bit over the seeming hostility towards a character whom I view as an innocent victim of the show's writers. Sam-fans should hang on, though, because this Sam never descends into petty or shrewish behavior.
She does, however, undergo a transformation over the course of the story and she is ultimately faced with an engaging moral dilemma: the choice between duty and her own desires. Sam rarely faces moral dilemmas onscreen, which I think weakens our empathy for her. This is a satisfying, wonderful look within as she struggles to make the right choice.
- The Rescue that Wasn't by Sideburns -- Once again, Daniel is the Damsel in Distress (tm), kidnapped by the lustful alien potentate only this time, Jack and SG-1 don't make it in time to rescue him. 24 Oct 2005
(Jack/Daniel :: Established Relationship :: Action/Adventure :: R)
(recommendation to come)
- Reveille by Lady of Shalott -- Jack and Daniel get more than they bargained for when another world agrees to share with them the secret of how they defeated the goa'uld. 24 Oct 2005
(Jack/Daniel :: First Time :: Cliché Play :: NC-17)
Clichéd plots became clichés because they are so satisfying when in the hands of a master, as this "telepathy/morning after amnesia/alien alcohol kinda made 'em do it" story proves. Part of the fun in this fic is watching Jack's struggle with the Daniel-think going on in his head before the tone darkens a bit as Daniel angsts over the Jack-think in his head and the two men struggle to come to a mutually beneficial understanding. A twisty ending leaves you with the question of what will happen for the two men in the future.
- Census Part I Part II by Dorothy Marley -- Jack gets the long form and Daniel gets the fallout. 24 Oct 2005
(Jack/Daniel/Teal'c :: Established Relationship :: Humor :: G)
A rarity in the world in which the sequel is even funnier than the original. Don't skip part 1, though, because otherwise part 2 will make no sense. An alternative universe in which the three men of SG-1 share a home and a relationship that causes difficulty for the US government because Jack decides to tell the Census Bureau the truth when they send him the dreaded long form of the census. Daniel is left to tap-dance the three of them out of perjury charges when he fields the follow-up call to discuss Jack's answers.
- Stardust by Kikkimax -- Military criminalists investigate the baffling case of three victims apparently burnt to a crisp during a freak storm. A lone survivor claims complete amnesia and bears a striking, circular mark on his temple. 24 Oct 2005
(Slash :: Daniel/Other :: Adventure, Mystery, Crossover** :: PG-13)
Stargate periodically airs earth-bound, NID-conspiracy episodes in which the highly trained, cohesive offworld team of SG-1 morphs into a not-very-funny version of the Keystone Kops. They bungle small tasks, consistently underestimate their opponents, and invariably prove to be incompetent; I hate these episodes with the flaming passion of a thousand suns.
I would hold a very different opinion if those episodes were more like this story.
This is a Must Read for Daniel fans, though be aware that this is not a team-fic. Rather, it's a "Daniel and a bunch of guest stars who happen to come from the NCIS universe" fic. The outsider's view of Daniel and his life is, at turns, amusing and sad while the way in which "Daniel" emerges from "John Doe" is poignant. SG-1 does catch up with the NCIS and they must join forces against the NID.
Amnesia is one of my guilty-pleasure plot devices; it allows character glimpses free of the usual barriers. I'll forgive a lot in an amnesia story as a result...and much of the time I must. Not so with this story. This is a carefully crafted story, a well-written mystery, that makes excellent use of the Stargate universe and its canon.
The pay-off is a juicy story chock-full of primordial Daniel: open, curious about the world, pliable, and hot. Yum!
**No familiarity with NCIS is necessary to follow or enjoy this story but knowledge of SG-1 is required as the impact of the story relies on knowing what the investigators do not. If you want to know more about the story, the author's own warnings should answer any further questions.
Stargate SG-1 Gen
The Hidden One by Gracie -- SG-1 has found God - and everybody wants a piece of him. 08 Nov 2005
(Action/Adventure :: Team and Sam-centric :: PG-13)
Finding an excellent writer who writes lengthy stories is a singular pleasure; you know that you’re going to have the delight of her company for a good, long time. Novel-length stories have lots of room within their expanded format for what makes a Good Read: plot, characterization, surprising twists, back story, judicious application of research, and adventure.
Sam’s role in this fic is meaty - the events test her mettle both mentally and physically. This is the tough woman who succeeded in the male-dominated world of the military. This is the scientist who went toe-to-toe with higher ranking officers around the briefing table in the pilot. She isn’t just a brain; she’s a tough soldier. This is the Sam I most enjoy watching on the tube or reading on the web.
The discovery of an abandoned goa’uld mothership, larger than any previously known, piques Earth’s interest in what seems an otherwise unremarkable planet. The presence of an onboard sarcophagus suggests caution, but the expedition turns to disaster before they can reach the ship when Sam is buried alive before her teammates’ very eyes.
While Daniel is left to make the logic-defying leap of faith needed to spur the SGC to action, Sam faces off against the wiliest of goa'uld, Amon-Ptah. Intrigue and tension are on the rise when the Tok'ra and goa'uld learn of the Tau'ri find.
Bonus points for excellent use of canon, a wonderful Doctor Fraiser, plausible and intricate plot, and extraordinary research into technology, geophysics, and Egyptian mythology. As Gracie wrote in the Author’s Note, "All the Earth-based equipment mentioned in this fic really does exist and works pretty much the way I've described them. (At least I hope they do.) I have taken some liberties with their capabilities - especially the infrared scanner whose performance I've really beefed-up. (This *is* science fiction, after all.)"
For those who love gen, this is an excellent adventure. For those who prefer a little romance in their fiction, you can choose to squint and see some het or femslash. It’s all subtext, though, so there’s nothing overt to annoy those who prefer romance-free fic.
One final note. The author warns for "Adult Themes," which is well-warranted for this story.
- Meeting of Minds by SEF -- Potential new allies offer advanced technology to Earth but are they sincere and why don't our existing allies want us to agree to a meeting? 24 Oct 2005
(Action/Adventure :: Team-oriented :: G)
A couple of years after the events of Scorched Earth, the Gadmeer express a desire to meet Daniel Jackson by issuing an invitation the SGC cannot refuse. The plot thickens when the SGC receives an unexpected, vague caution from our allies.
Why does this invitation draw galactic attention? Are the Gadmeer as peace-loving and trustworthy as Lotan led the team to believe? How reliable is the shocking tale the Gadmeer tell about the race who wiped out their planet? Is the gift offered to Daniel legitimate and, if so, what will he decide to do with it?
There are a few, quiet moments in which each member of the team acknowledges, and deals with, the trauma of Daniel’s death. This was largely denied us onscreen so it’s doubly satisfying here. The story is told from Sam’s point of view but don’t let the narrator fool you; this is about who Daniel is and what makes him Daniel.
That said, it stays firmly within team fic territory, in which all of SG-1 are present and have important roles within the story. The characters are well-written and easily recognizable as what I see on my screen each week. While SG-1 and the Gadmeer negotiate an understanding, the story ties together some dangling story threads from canon and sheds light on a distant past that some might prefer to keep buried.
Author on LJ: Blue Pencil -- SEF
Author's Website: Stargate Fiction by SEF1029
- The Midas Syndrome by Rheanna -- Sinister complications arise after SG-1 travels to an Earth-like planet devoid of life. 24 Oct 2005
(Adventure :: Team-oriented :: G?)
SG-1 finds a conundrum when they travel to a world rich in resources but devoid of life - not even microbes exist. Events inevitably spiral out of control (of course they do; why else write a story about it!) endangering Jack O'Neill's life and Earth itself.
Run, don't walk, to read this one. It's set in season one; early season one at that. It reads as if it was written then, too, in that it departs from later-developed canon a bit but not in any way that undermines the story. A lot of adventure stories fail because characters are blinded to easy solutions for the purpose of lengthening the story but this resolution, if a trifle deus ex machina, was not glaringly obvious. Good, strong characterizations abound, a surprise considering how early in the series this must have been written.
- Junior's Series of Stories by Junior -- Junior narrates three different SG-1 adventures. 24 Oct 2005
(Fluff, Silly Humor :: PG-13)
Teal'c's symbiote, a.k.a. 'Junior,' has a decided perspective and a definitive lifeplan. It's good to see such initiative in one so young, even if the values expressed are a tad alien.
I hesitate to call this "gen" (i.e., no romance) as Junior clearly has feelings for the Lovely Samantha, his future queen, and his adoration of Beloved Daniel's many wonderful attributes is straight out of slash!badfic. There isn't any real pairing involved and the website itself lists it as "gen" so I'm following suit. Humor-impaired Jonas fanatics may wish to skip this one as Junior's take on him is uncomplimentary.
Reading over my recommendations, I realized it was looking snooty and as if the only fic worth reading had to have intellectual aspirations. Not true! This series of stories is aimed purely at the funny bone. The world needs more laughter and this trilogy (as of this post, anyway) provides just that.
Cookies by Panther -- Daniel Jackson likes chocolate walnut cookies for more than their flavor; they're a reminder of why he is a survivor. 05 Nov 2005
(Character Study :: G)
Panther takes two of the most personally traumatic experiences we’ve seen in Daniel Jackson’s life, the death of his parents and the death of his wife, and crafts a heartwarming tale that explores a part of Daniel's childhood. A small detail from the powerful scene in Daniel’s “alternate reality” in Forever and a Day is fodder for this touching look at Daniel’s introduction to the foster care system.
The writers gave Daniel a tragic past - watching his parents crushed to death is one of the worst fates I can think of for a child - but never followed up on how that affected who Daniel became. I wiped a few tears and sniffled a bit as I read it but the ultimate tone of this work is neither sad nor wallowing in tragedy. It concerns itself with how a brilliant little boy makes sense of his world and goes on to become a man whose tragic past allows him to reach out to others.

Wormhole
X-treme by Danvers and Gene Este -- Jack and Daniel squirm when a mania for slashy 'Wormhole Extreme' fanfic sweeps the base.
(Humor :: PG-13)
(recommendation to come)
Stargate SG-1 Het
- Fools Gold by Corby -- Love makes fools of us all at some time in our lives; this is Daniel’s time. 24 Oct 2005
(Daniel/Shau're :: PG)
This gentle fic is a rarity in stories featuring Daniel and his wife: it's happy. Fools Gold celebrates the love of two people and studiously avoids foreshadowing of the angst we know will soon enough befall them. Set in the time between the movie and the series premiere, this is a quiet story about the depth of Daniel’s love for his wife, whose lack of "oqda brings derision from even her closest of friends.
Daniel chooses a remedy that typifies the passionate man I adore. This is the Daniel Jackson willing to risk his life in going through the Stargate for years in hopes of finding and freeing his beloved wife, the over-achiever who completed multiple doctorates at a young age, and the tender lover so in evidence in Forever in a Day.

- Making the Connection by Kyn_Moonlight -- Aiden celebrates his last night on earth and proves an eager explorer. 24 Oct 2005
(John/Aiden :: NC-17)
- This is hot.
- This is hot.
- This is very well-written.
- This is hot.
- You'll never watch Rising in quite the same way again.
This is a fine piece of writing and it's absolutely brilliant smut. A wonderful marriage of both the physical and emotional aspects of sex, each magnifying the impact of the other. There's an excruciatingly fine balance in describing intense bed action without slipping into what reads like turgid choreography (swollen, pulsing Tab A into slicked and begging Slot B) and this fic has found it. Not just for a paragraph or two, but for the entire length of the fic's 973 words.
It's not just impressive smut; it's also impressive writing.
The writer deftly handles two different timelines, interweaving past and present into a cohesive whole. One can read it on a more symbolic level as intertwining tales of discovery: the exploration of Aiden's expanding sexuality mirroring humanity's expanding universe with travel to an unknown galaxy. Sort of the large writ small in the experience of one man.
It's a beautiful example of how sex "Ought To Be Written," with the actions flowing out of who the characters are and serving to illustrate what they feel. Aiden's first person narrative serves the story well. The claustrophobia of being inside only one person's mind heightens the tension and allows for deeply personal revelations throughout the fic.
Or, yanno, you could read it just because it's hot.
- Hero Worship by Jalabert -- John Sheppard has a crush on his second in command. It's mutual, but Ford keeps his feet on the ground and Sheppard's head in the clouds. 24 Oct 2005
(John/Aiden :: NC-17)
Two adult men written as two adult men. There’s no cliched "damsel in distress" or sickly sweet sappiness here. The intense, life-and-death interaction between John and Aiden in Thirty-eight Minutes is a natural springboard for their deepening relationship in this fic.
The canonical lack of character development that limits Aiden Ford's popularity in fan fiction seems, conversely, to inspire this writer. Taking the bare bones sketch of the character, Jalabert builds a wonderfully complete and compelling Aiden who is more than up to the challenge of John Sheppard. Having read this piece early in the first season, I found myself watching the onscreen character through the lens of this Aiden.
This story has it all: hot sex, exploring Atlantis, military/civilian friction, and gentle humor. Bonus points for inclusion of characters other than the featured pairing, all of them ringing true but most especially a delightfully snarky, self-centered Rodney and Teyla, who is warm but at sea in a new culture.
- Zapped by Jalabert -- John loses control of his ATA gene and becomes an unwilling object of study. 24 Oct 2005
(John/Aiden :: Established Relationship :: NC-17)
Life isn't all Skittles and beer when you're stranded in another galaxy -- even when the Poster Boys for the Importance of Good Dental Hygiene aren't currently sucking your life out through your chest. The monotony of downtime wears on the personnel and the natives become restless, setting in motion events that land John in an Ancient isolation room.
This story explores the interaction of the ATA gene and Ancient technology, the close friendships amongst the characters, and unexpected challenges because everything is just a little skewed when you live in another galaxy. Against that backdrop, John and Aiden deepen their relationship. Aiden gets a chance to show that he is A Marine as well as a beautiful man.
As with its prequel, Hero Worship, I enjoy the inclusion of all the characters even though this is clearly a John and Aiden fic. They're crisply written and sound so much like the characters I saw on screen early in Season 1 that I hear their voices as I read. Extra gold stars for including Athosians (continuity!), knowledge/technology gained from the Stargate Program (continuity!), and for avoiding sappy declarations between men early in a relationship that tend to throw me right out of most slash.
Happiness = Aiden by Jalabert -- John was born to live in Atlantis. 05 Nov 2005
(John/Aiden :: First Time :: Voyeurism (slight) :: R)
Atlantis is not simply a collection of computers and rooms awaiting the arrival of people bearing that ATA gene; it’s alive. Sentient technology run amok is a Great Theme in classic sci-fi literature and Jalabert plays with its lighter side in this piece.
If you stop to think about it, a technology that opens doors at a thought, answers questions with heads-up displays, and can pinpoint living beings within its confines at a moment's notice is rather a Big Brother-esque setting.
When Atlantis decides that John has a crush on Aiden, it begins feeding him real-time Aiden updates and otherwise contriving to give John a “first-hand” experience. The more John resists, the more Atlantis insists. Of course, John should know better than to argue with a matchmaking metropolis. A technology that complex and advanced has to know what’s best for him, no?
The next time you’re watching an episode of Stargate Atlantis and you notice a scene is particularly well-lit, you’ll be amongst the handful of insiders who know why.

- Turncoat by Dustandroses -- Tony makes a bet with Gibbs, but what exactly is he risking? 24 Oct 2005
(Gibbs/DiNozzo :: First Time :: BDSM, PWP :: NC-17)
If there's one thing I'm tired of seeing, it PWP's. Let's face it, they titillate and agitate but they rarely satisfy. Ultimately, it comes down to the mechanics: insert Tab A into Tab B and thrust. Loudly. Fuck yeah! The action may be hot and heavy for the pair soiling the sheets but frankly I'd rather read a book. If there's another thing I can do without it's BDSM. Somehow it became engrained in fangirls' heads that gay = bondage. If two guys getting it on is hot, two guys getting it on with whips and chains is even hotter. It's become a cliché. If I was male and queer, I'd give BDSM a pass just so I didn't look like I was living a fangirl fantasy.
But sometimes it works. This is a PWP with a purpose. We never do find out what the bet was, but the payoff is hot. Gibbs gets DiNozzo, naked and eager and writhing in his bed, tied up like a Christmas turkey. DiNozzo gets the shock of his life--and that's a good thing. It's not really bondage. But I didn't find myself reaching for Jane Austen, either.

- The Window by Summertime -- Tony wakes up alone. Things don't get better from there. 24 Oct 2005
(Drama/angst :: Dark :: PG-13)
If you buy into Tony DiNozzo's preferred façade: the buffoonish, skirt-chasing, glib charmer, this story is not for you. But if you are a fan of taut, sustained psychological drama run, do not walk, to read this story. The author manages to build the tension as she follows the story of Tony's abduction, rescue and recovery from two perspectives--Tony's and Gibbs'. While this is a gen story, there's a strong enough bond between the two men to please those who choose to see the world through slash-colored goggles. The author warns that this story is dark, but it's mainly a darkness of the mind. It does include a small amount of violence, all self-inflicted, but if the thought of blood makes you squeamish, just suck it up and read this anyway.

Hot. Hot. Hot.
This is the story all aspiring writers of smut ought to study. It should be required reading for anyone who wants to write intense, sexy, erotic fiction that leaves you moist and wanting more. This is the fic that keep PWP's to my "worth taking a gander" category. I live in constant hope that somewhere out there lurks another piece of fannish erotica this hot. I sincerely doubt it.
Warrick (sex on two legs) and Catherine (lucky bitch) make a sandwich of Nick--beautiful, passionate Nick. This isn't so much about sex but about fucking--fast, hard and deep. It's about overwhelming the senses with stimuli. Heat, sweat, the sound of skin against skin. Naked, animal lust. And Warrick...
