It's hard to tell how seriously Chris ever took a NFL career; he has said on numerous occasions that he chose football because he saw players had an easier time entering into acting. (Professional football as a "backup career" to acting reminds me of a friend of mine who quit geophyscis to become a chef because he always had something he could fall back on.) Seems to have worked, though!
