Don thinks of himself first and foremost as an artist. He began college on an athletic scholarship and was majoring in art and physical education when serious injuries ended both his athletic aspirations and the funding for his education. A professor helped him find a job building and painting scenery. He moved to the stage when they needed an actor capable of lifting a tall actress over his head.
